Biography

I am an Associate Professor at CIn (Centro de Informática) of UFPE (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco), Recife, Brazil. Just after my Electrical Engineering (EE) graduation at UFPE, I lived away from Recife for 14 years to study and work in several locations in Brazil, and in Silicon Valley, in the USA. Passionate about realizing things, the environment I found at Stanford University during my Visiting Assistant Professor appointment in the late 2000s inspired me like no other at that time. Back to Brazil, my choice to build my career in my hometown sounded natural: Few cities in Brazil are so invigorating and full of creative people like Recife. I got my Doctoral and M.Sc. degrees in EE from UNICAMP in 2006 and 2001, respectively, and the EE undergraduate degree from UFPE in 1998.

My research areas are in computer networks and systems, cybersecurity and vehicular networking.

I have received the CNPq Research Productivity Fellowship (PQ) for five consecutive periods, 2010-2013, 2013-2016, 2016-2019, 2019-2022 and 2022-2025. In 2009, I was the co-recipient of the Best Paper Award at IEEE GLOBECOM (2nd Workshop on Green Communications), Hawaii, USA (paper: Sleep mode for energy saving PONs: Advantages and drawbacks). In 2014, a new ONU power management mode for TDM PONs, named the Watchful Sleep mode, which has been published in the paper Unifying sleep and doze modes for energy-efficient PON systems, I co-authored, has been standardized by the ITU-T (see G.987.3 (01/2014) and G.984.3 (01/2014)). The Watchful Sleep mode is now the only allowed power saving technique in 40-Gigabit-capable passive optical networks (NG-PON2), and ITU-T G.9804.1 (11/19) - Higher Speed Passive Optical Networks: Requirements, which encompass 50 Gbps PONs.

Before joining CIn-UFPE, I held the following positions:

I also was a Visiting Researcher for shorter periods in other Institutions such as Technical University of Denmark - DTU, Lyngby, Denmark (Sep 2014), Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal (Jul 2007), and Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudos Superiores de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico (Oct-2003 – Nov 2003).

I am the Program Lead/Coordinator of the Apple Developer Academy at UFPE, and Chair of the Automotive Security Research Group – Recife Chapter. I am also a member of the IEEE, ACM, and Sociedade Brasileira de Computação (SBC)
